NFL player found dead in this case was Denver Broncos receiver Kenny McKinley, by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Until now, Kenny McKinley could not have been a well known name, except for some fans and Broncos by his alma mater in South Carolina. However, Kenny McKinley is now just another statistic, as the new player in the NFL found dead.
The Denver Broncos used to mourn the loss of one of their own. In the New Year’s Day 2007, cornerback Darrent Williams was murdered in a drive-by “with the running back Damien Nash collapsed from cardiac arrest two months later. The Broncos had gone three years without another death player, but that streak was broken yesterday.
News about an NFL player found dead yesterday morning broke early in the Denver Post. They wrote that 23 years of age, Kenny McKinley was discovered dead at 3:25 pm Mountain Time yesterday. It was officially confirmed to be a suicide, but is being treated as such for the moment.
With another NFL player found dead, questions of why it happened and why kill McKinley. Suicide has become a recurring theme in the NFL, as some players who suffer serious injuries and brain damage have recourse to it. It is also an issue in college football after Owen Thomas Penn committed suicide in April.
McKinley was on the injured reserve list, but was due to a knee injury. He had season-ending surgery in August after a similar injury ended his rookie season last year. He only played eight games in his career, mostly on special teams after he set receiving records of South Carolina.
Despite his short career, Kenny McKinley is still an NFL player found dead labeled. No matter how limited time is one game, one is still a professional athlete. As such, it becomes news, and more questions are raised when a player is accused of killing.
