New York City Subway Food Ban, Hold on to your egg sandwiches and coffee, the New York State Senate is considering a ban on food on the subway.

The proposal prohibits anyone from consuming any food within the subway, on the train, or in any station. Violators would face a $250 fine. That money would go to an MTA fund to fight litter.

Contained within the legislation is the reason behind it. State Senator Bill Perkins (D-Manhattan) explains the purpose of the bill is “to mitigate the growing rat infestation in the NYC subway system.” Perkins says his office, which serves Harlem and Manhattan’s West Side, sent out survey and the response to rats on the subway was “overwhelming.”
