Martinez is the best rookie in the series of Western classification per year in the middle of the season. But he took over the car and the team that won the West Series championship in 2009 with Jason Bowles as his driver.
Martinez has posted some impressive finishes. It was the best rookie finish in ninth place overall in the race West Series at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale on July 3.
But his team, the Sunrise Ford team owned by Bob Bruncati, is used to winning races and contending for championships.
Martinez said he is awaiting the second half of the season of the West, especially the road courses. The second half of the West series begins Sunday at Portland International Raceway in Oregon, one of two remaining road courses in the western calendar in the series.
