Mozart In The Jungle

January 11, 2016 by staff

Mozart In The Jungle, Amazon surprised Sunday night when the streaming giant took home the Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy prize during Sunday night’s Golden Globes – but not for last year’s winner, Transparent.

Instead, the streaming giant’s Mozart in the Jungle hit the high notes, dethroning the reigning champion. Despite being a puzzling nominee in the category to critics, the series’ classical-music-meets-sxy-intrigue tale about a charming conductor (Gael García Bernal, also a Golden Globe nominee) figuring out his new role as the maestro of the New York Symphony won audiences over and garnered the show a second season.

“Look, this is the great thing about the HFPA and the Globes is that they watch, and they’re not put off by the idea of a show whose specificity equates to universality,” exec producer Paul Weitz told reporters afterward. “So I think we’re slightly shocked, but the fix is we have an incredible cast. You can say it’s low-profile, but we certainly don’t have a low-profile cast.”

“Hopefully now with this, people will see it and they’ll watch more of the show, and ultimately through the show, get into some different kinds of music and stuff,” cast member Jason Schwartzman (who also serves as an EP), added. “It’s kind of a roundabout way of getting to learn about music.”

The win, Mozart’s first in the category, also beat out Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, Hulu’s Casual, and HBO’s Veep and Silicon Valley.
