Moonshiners Virginia, Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control are unhappy with the Discovery Channel’s show Moonshiners, saying if they had known what it would entail, they wouldn’t have agreed to air it.
The show follows western Virginia residents who illegally brew their own moonshine as well as the local authorities’ efforts to stop them.
Spokesperson for the Virginia ABC has now said that liquor isn’t really getting produced and that the show is simply a dramatization, telling The Associated Press “If illegal activity was actually taking place, the Virginia ABC Bureau of Law Enforcement would have taken action.”
They also issued a statement saying that they were “not aware of the false depiction of moonshine manufacturing,” saying “Virginia ABC agreed to participate in an informative piece that documents the history of moonshine and moonshine investigations in Virginia,” adding they that “would not have participated in the ‘documentary’ had it known of this portrayal.”
MSNBC reports that Shaw also reveals that Discovery had been asked to issue a disclaimer, however, “the request was overlooked.”
However, a news release seems to contradict Shaw’s comments, as it said last month “Viewers will witness practices rarely, if ever, seen on television including the sacred rite of passage for a moonshiner – firing up the still for the first time.”
