Monte Carlo, World number two Novak Djokovic, unbeaten this year, retreats from the Monte Carlo Masters next week because of a knee injury.

“It’s a shock and sad news not only for the tournament and my fans, but for me,” said the -year-old Serb said in a statement. No further details on the extent of the injury.

Djokovic, who lives in Monaco and trains much of the year in the courts of Monte Carlo, is expected to launch a season of clay that have prospered and extended its unbeaten streak to 26 games, dating back to December.

Since winning his second Grand Slam title at the Australia Open in January, Djokovic triumphed in Indian Wells and Miami and is putting pressure on Rafa Nadal remain ranked at number one.
