Mitt Romney Roars Back With Two Big Wins

Mitt Romney Roars Back With Two Big Wins, Stuck in second gear in the run-up to the Michigan primary, Mitt Romney finally hit top speed near the finish line to eke out a narrow victory in his home state after romping in Arizona — and now looks to blunt rival Rick Santorum’s surge in the pivotal Super Tuesday contests next week.
“We didn’t win by a lot but we won by enough, and that’s all that counts,” said the former Bay State governor, who desperately needed the two-state sweep after a spate of February losses. “It was just a week ago that the pundits and the pollsters, they were ready to count us out. … I stand ready to lead our party back to victory and our nation back to prosperity.”
But Romney’s struggle against Santorum in Michigan confers only a fragile front-runner status at best, said Washington, D.C-based Republican consultant Keith Appell.
“It’s his second time running for president. He’s supposed to win in Michigan, and he’s supposed to win big. If he can’t do that, I’m not sure he deserves to be the nominee,” said a clearly unimpressed Appell, who isn’t affiliated with any campaign.
