She has been on stage when she was a student at the Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts in Marysville, but never in a pageant. However, the chance for a scholarship to the school of her choice caught her attention.
“The economy is so bad it sounds absolutely amazing,” Chima said.
Chima, 21, is attending Brandman University in Yuba City and hopes to study psychology at U.C. Davis or U.C. Los Angeles. She plans to be a marriage and family therapist.
She is one of two Mid-Valley women taking part in the pageant near Palm Desert where the contestants will be trimmed to the top 20.
Katelyn Mena, a 2011 Colusa High School graduate and 2010 Miss Colusa County, is also among the competitors. The daughter of Fred and Alicia Mena, she attends Westmont College near Santa Barbara.
The competitions today through Sunday in Indian Wells also include the Miss California Teen USA finals.
Since first starting in the 2012 competition’s activities last June, Chima has been hitting the gym, doing a lot of shopping, getting advice from family and friends and having people ask her questions about current events.
