Mike Singletary, (AP) – While Troy Smith and Mike Singletary bickered on the sideline, rookie Sat Bradford remained calm veteran. The No. 1 draft draft picks helped to keep the player in the playoffs St. Louis Rams car along, also records Peyton Manning rookie in the NFL for completions in a 25-17 victory over the 49ers in San Francisco Sunday.
Mark 12-year eclipse Manning was beautiful. Help the Rams (7-8) remain on track to end a drought of five series in a winner-take-all game for the NFC West title next week an agreement was far more important.
“I think it’s really cool,” Bradford said of the record. “I’m all fired up about winning. If you do not fight for a game like that, you’re probably in the wrong business.”
The Seahawks (6-9) have lost seven of nine after falling 38-15 to Tampa Bay. Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck left with a hip injury in the first quarter.
But they still could become the first team to win a division with a losing record. With a win, take the West Seattle based on better division record. St. Louis snapped a stroke of 10 defeats in the series with a 20-3 victory in early October.
“We are here to get our game in the regular season last, and we control our own destiny,” Bradford said before the game Seahawks.
The Rams defense kept the two Smiths on the race, Troy Smith and Alex Smith dismissed twice each. Singletary Troy Smith has another series after a heated exchange late in the third quarter, and then the bench after the 49ers (5-10) has three years and on their first possession of the fourth quarter.
The 49ers were eliminated from playoff consideration, and have not made the playoffs since 2002.
“Troy is a passionate guy and how he answered it very well,” said Singletary. “He is frustrated, I’m frustrated.
“We’re both trying to get something happening on the ground. That’s all it was.”
The 49ers locker room was closed for about 20 minutes after the game before Singletary has emerged, saying he had no regrets about his choice of the shift.
“As head coach, the most important quality for me is to be able to make a decision and be able to live or die with it,” said Singletary. “And do not turn around and blame someone else.”
Singletary is 18-22 with two years to go on a four-year contract and was not sure if he would return, saying: “I do not know, it’s not my decision.”
The Rams finished 5-3 at home, the first franchise winning record since 2004. They were 2-22 the previous three seasons combined.
The 49ers were 1-7 on the road, where they were outscored 200-117. They appeared to collapse after missing a chance to take a lead of 17-15 at the end of third quarter when Jeff Reed shanked a field attempt from 34 yards.
Troy Smith passed for 356 yards in the overtime win over the 49ers, the Rams last month, but has not played the last two games.
“I would not say there were many differences, but you have to give St. Louis credit,” Smith said. “Defensively, they do a lot of things to put the quarterback and the team in a situation not so comfortable.”
James Hall had 1 ½ sacks for a defense that scored four, including a safety in the first quarter when Troy Smith fumbled a snap in the shotgun poor zone. Troy Smith was 2 for 3 for 85 yards on a drive of the second quarter capped by a touchdown pass of 60 yards to Michael Crabtree, but was only 7-19 for 153 yards, when Alex Smith was replaced Mid-way through the fourth quarter.
Bradford broke a slump of three games and no touchdowns five interceptions. He was 16 for 20 for 168 yards in the second half, including a 3-yard pass to Laurent Robinson, who is 22-14 with 9:36 to go, and finished 28 of 37 for 292 yards with no interceptions.
The 49ers stuffed the run, limiting Steven Jackson to 48 yards on 24 carries.
Bradford has 335 completions, Manning’s record topping 326 in 1998. He passed Chris Weinke for the second rookie in attempts with 554, needing 22 weeks to eclipse next Manning.
The Rams scored on their first record for only the second time, receiving a call on Nate Clements interference, with Jackson scoring from the 1 on the next play.
Josh Brown kicked three field goals for St. Louis, giving him 11, the last three games and tied his career best season with 31.
The 49ers led 14-12 at halftime, although they have totaled three first downs and 82 yards in penalties.
Ginn has not been hit on the kickoff return to score the first 49ers in the second quarter. San Francisco had no yards on 10 returns punts by Donnie Jones at the first meeting Nov. 14 in San Francisco.
St. Louis has increased 9-0 late in the first quarter on security, but then three years and three straight series while the 49ers took their stride.
Notes: On their opening possession, the Rams scored two touchdowns and three field goals, with seven punts, two fumbles lost, and a blocked. … 49ers C David Baas injured his left rib cage in the first quarter but returned late in the second quarter in time to lead the 49ers’ only touchdown. … Ginn returned two kickoffs for touch last year with Miami, and scored on a punt return for the Dolphins in 2007. … 49ers backup CB Phillip Adams broke his left ankle blocking on the kickoff to open the second half. Adams was carted off.
