Meryl Streep And Julia Roberts, When Tracy Letts’ play August: Osage County opened on Broadway in 2008 some critics claimed it was the first indisputably great American play of the 21st century.

It will soon be adapted by Weinstein Co. into a major new Hollywood film, with Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep in the leading roles, the Hollywood Reporter has disclosed.

The film will be made by The Company Men director John Wells, who has a long history in writing, producing, and directing on TV dramas including ER and Shameless.

The Pullizer Prize and Tony Award-winner is a darkly comic melodrama in which a family crisis unfolds over the course of a family meal the end of a funeral. The play, which is three and a half hours long on stage, is set at the Weston family’s idyllic country home on the Oklahoma plains.

Streep will play Violet, the wife of a alcoholic academic, who is addicted to prescription drugs. Roberts, who will play her daughter, has said: “After seeing Meryl Streep’s mesmerizing portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, it has me even more excited and proud to co-star with her.”
