Speed control systems are supposed to turn off immediately when the driver uses either the brake or accelerator. In certain circumstances, including if the driver pumps the brakes, speed control may require an excessive amount of braking force before it will shut down, according to a letter from Mercedes-Benz sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration March 31.
In all cases, the cruise control can still be cut with the steering column mounted stalk that controls the system. The vehicles involved are 2000 model year SUVs to Mercedes-Benz M-Class 2002 and 2000 to 2004 M-Class SUV AMG.
The recall is expected to begin in September. M-Class owners can call customer service for Mercedes-Benz at -800-367-6372.
