McDonalds DNA SprayMcDonalds DNA Spray, Wollongong McDonald’s is taking the fight against crime to a new level, dousing would-be robbers with an invisible DNA spray as they try to flee the scene.
The high-tech spray units, which are being trialled in six of the state’s busiest McDonald’s restaurants – including Wollongong’s Corrimal St outlet – blast robbers with a micro mist of DNA solution that sticks to their skin for up to two weeks, and to their clothes for up to six months.

Once there has been a security breach it is impossible to leave the scene without being sprayed with the fine mist.

The solution, which is invisible to the nkd eye when dry, can be detected by police using an ultraviolet light and then matched to a specific restaurant byanlysing the synthetic DNA data code.

Designed as a deterrent, the SelectaDNA Spray System is reportedly the first of its kind to be used in Australia after it proved to be a significant success in McDonald’s outlets overseas.

McDonald’s Australia chief restaurant support officer Jackie McArthur said crime rates were not a factor when choosing which restaurants to take part in the trial.

”The restaurants in this trial, including Wollongong, represent some of our busiest restaurants, so it makes sense to trial new technology here,” she said.

”Security incidents at McDonald’s are not widespread and we have not seen an increase in the number of incidents in the past year, however, we think prevention is key to this and to reducing the number further.

”We are always looking at proactive measures that we can implement to prevent any incident from occurring.”

The spray will be used in conjunction with existing security measures, including CCTV, strict procedures, intensive training and consultative relationships with police.

Highly visible warning stickers will be placed in restaurant windows to alert would-be thieves to the system.

If the spray proves successful, McDonald’s will roll out the system in restaurants across the country
