Mayor Admits Affair At Council Meeting, Angry San Fernando residents packed the Council Chambers at City Hall Monday night for a chance to express their feelings about Mayor Mario Hernandez and the affair he recently admitted he was having with another council member. Hernandez confessed an affair with council member Maribel De La Torre during a city council meeting last week.
Two dozen residents took the podium during the public comment period of Monday’s council meeting, many of them calling for Hernandez’s resignation.
Members of Hernandez’s family sat in the front row as resident after resident gave the politician a tongue-lashing.
“You know what, Mayor? You’ve got no shame at all. I don’t have no [sic] respect for you” one resident, a U.S. veteran, said.
“You don’t have respect for your wife or your family,” another said.
“We are wounded. We’re mortally wounded,” a third resident added. “And those who have mortally wounded us must step down.”
“I have always remained honest and truthful to my family,” Hernandez said during the meeting.
And it wasn’t just the mayor. Mayor Pro Tem Brenda Esqueda was questioned at the podium by a woman who wanted to know about her life behind closed doors.
“If you are having a relationship with a police officer, is it not a conflict of interest that you’re even voting on any issues whatsoever?” the woman asked.
When asked by KTLA if she thought she should resign, Esqueda said only, “I will continue doing the work for the residents of San Fernando.”
Mayor Hernandez refused to answer when asked the same question.
In audio from last week’s meeting, Hernandez announced he had filed for bankruptcy.
