Maryland New Area Code

March 23, 2012 by staff

Maryland New Area Code, A typical area code can generate about 8 million phone numbers, but we live in a world where even 7-year-olds have cell phones, where our many government workers often carry two devices (work, personal), and where the population is growing, so it seems we’re running out of seven-digit combinations in these parts.

The new area code is an overlay for the 410 and 443 area codes, according to the state’s Public Service Commission. What that means is that new numbers in the geographic area currently served by the 410 and 443 area codes will likely start with 667.

The counties affected by the change are: Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Baltimore City, Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Dorchester, Harford, Howard, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico and Worcester.

The need is obvious when you glance at population figures. Anne Arundel, for instance, had 427,239 people in the 1990 census. In the 2010 census: 537,656. Howard County had 187,328 people in the 1990 census: In the 2010 census: 287,085.
