Marriage Equality New York, On Friday night, Republican-controlled New York in the Senate voted 33-29 to legalize gay marriage, achieving a major victory for gay rights. Andrew Cuomo’s Democratic governor signed the measure shortly before midnight Friday.
Twitter lit after the historic legislation passed and holding line that includes openly gay celebrities and allies, including “Born This Way,” the singer Lady GaGa.
“I can not mourn. We did the kids,” she wrote GaGa with more than 11 million followers. “The revolution is our duty to fight for love, justice & equality. Rejoice NY, and propose. We did it!”
Gaga also shared a black and white photo with her team celebrating victory.
Katy Perry tweeted, “New York I Love You U! Officially the coldest place on earth!”
Openly lsbn Ellen DeGeneres had her Twitter page and wrote: “I am excited about the news from New York. Equality in Marriage! Every day we get a little more. What an amazing feeling.”
Darren Criss, who plays Elaine on Glee, tweeted, “As if you did not already have enough to celebrate and enjoy today. A big hug to New York from my hotel room alone in London. # MarriageEquality.” Tweet In a second, he wrote, “I sing every night, but now has a better sense:” New York-concrete jungle where dreams are made, there is nothing you can do. “:)”
The continued support of celebrity’s openly gay actor Neil Patrick Harris, who twitter, “which spent! Equality in Marriage in New York! Yes Progress Thanks to all who worked so hard on this! A historic night!”
Comedian Kathy Griffin and LGBT ally tweeted, “Tonight we are all New Yorkers! Straight & gay alike, let’s all celebrate the marriage # equality. The right side of history!”
New York becomes the sixth state, and by far the largest, where it will be marriage equality extended to all persons irrespective of sexual orientation.
Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Iowa and Washington DC allow same-sex marriages.
