Marie Callender’s Restaurant, Tucson only Marie Callender’s restaurant, in Wilmot Road, near East Broadway, closed abruptly on Sunday. The restaurant, famous for its pastries, had been there for decades. The Memphis restaurant chain’s parent company headquartered in Tennessee, Perkins & Marie Callender’s Inc., said Monday it is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. He cited the weak economic climate, especially in Florida, Nevada and California, where many of its restaurants.
As a result, 58 Marie Callender’s restaurants or Perkins closed nationwide over the weekend. Marie Callender’s website showed no places in Arizona on Monday. There have been four in the Phoenix area, in addition to the Tucson restaurant.
In a press release on Monday, CEO Jay Trungale describes the action of the company as a “first round of store closings,” and said that the restaurants were closed for poor performance.
Documents filed with U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware said the company could not afford to build new restaurants and upgrade existing ones, thereby losing traffic to the restaurant’s better-funded competitors. A shopping center near Tucson Marie Callender previously closed.
