FAIRFIELD — Fairfield Police have issued a correction on the age of the child involved. Chief Brad Winters says the girl behind the wheel was 11-years-old not 9-years-old as he had previously reported.
FAIRFIELD — A Wayne County man has been arrested for letting a 9-year-old behind the wheel of his SUV.
Silas Fulkerson, 46, of Fairfield, was arrested Sunday on charges of leaving the scene of an accident and endangering the life and health of a child.
Fairfield Police were called out around 8 p.m. Saturday to the scene of a single vehicle accident near the intersection of West Main and Market Avenue.
Chief Brad Winters says an off-duty officer with Illinois State Police saw a Ford Explorer turn the wrong way onto westbound Main Street. The Explorer went off the road and across a ditch before coming to a stop in the parking lot of a nearby restaurant. A man then got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
The man, later identified as Fulkerson, turned himself in at the Fairfield Police Department the next day. Fulkerson told authorities a 9-year-old girl was on his lap steering the SUV when the accident happened.
Both the 9-year-old and a 5-year-old girl suffered minor injuries in the crash. They were taken to Fairfield Memorial Hospital as a precaution.
