Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

November 24, 2011 by staff

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Let me start by wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving Day 2011. Here at Only Kent we hope you’re all having a wonderful day surrounded by the people that you love. We know that for many of you the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade symbolizes the whole occasion and we’ve rounded up some of this year’s highlights and also have a video of Santa’s appearance at today’s parade that you can view below this story.
In our Parade information article we told how 3 million people were expected to turn out today on the streets of New York for the big parade, with another 50 million watching coverage on NBC. The parade lived up to the usual excitement with over 40 balloons, 800 clowns, 1,600 cheerleaders, 27 floats and 11 marching bands. The stars turned out as usual, some appearing on the floats and others on stage at Herald Square at the end of the route. Big names included Cee Lo Green, Mary J Blige, Avril Lavigne, Julie Andrews, Gloria Estefan, Miley Cyrus, Barry Manilow, the Jonas Brothers, perfomers from Broadway and what do you know… the Muppets! Cee Lo Green rode the parade on a float alongside hockey players and said, “I feel like a kid all over, man, you know?” according to an Associated Press report over on The Washington Post.

The weather was kind and brilliant sunshine shone over the 85th Macy’s Day Parade with vivid blue skies, wonderful for watching those giant balloons. As well as balloon favorites like Snoopy, Buzz Lightyear, Kermit the Frog and Spider-Man there was a new creation from filmmaker extraordinaire Tim Burton which the crowds appeared to enjoy. One of the spectators lining the route was Wilfred Denk of Germany who was on his honeymoon with wife Bethina. Wilfred had high praise for the high school marching bands and as a float bearing what looked like Mount Rushmore came into view Bethina said, “Look, Neil Diamond!” As the singer waved in front of the heads of Mount Rushmore the crowds sang, “Sweet Caroline. Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!”

One of the show-stopping numbers came from Harry Potter Star Daniel Radcliffe and the cast of “How to Succeed…” singing “Brotherhood of Man.” Over on Broadwayworld.com there’s another video to view of that energetic performance. In the closing stages the sounds at last of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” and one of the most eagerly awaited moments of the day, with dancing singing and finally Santa and Mrs Claus. Then another enchanting Macy’s Day Parade is over for another year. Remember you can see the Santa Claus moment on a YouTube video below this story.
