Little League World Series 2010, Having a team qualify for the Grand Junction Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, has always been a kind of fantasy for fans of small local league.
The Orchard Mesa Little League big boys are two wins to make that fantasy a reality.
Orchard Mesa plays in the semifinals of the Southwest Regional Conference in Waco, Texas, at 4 this afternoon against Pearland (Texas) Little League White.
The game will be televised on ESPN2 (Ch. 34 on Bresnan Cable.)
“We got here and wanted to win a game to show we can play with these guys,” said manager Pete Orchard Mesa Steves. “Now we’ve won two and are in the semifinals.”
Getting to this point is quite an accomplishment for Orchard Mesa, who has played every game in the Little League playoffs on the road.
In 2001, the World Series expanded from eight to 16 teams, and reorganized the targeted regions.
Colorado went from the West Regional of the Southwest Regional.
The measure did not equal success.
Heading into the tournament this year, representatives of the state of Colorado have gone a combined 2-23 with the big boys of the Southwest Texas Regional.
Orchard Mesa performance this year is the best since Little League Academy lost in the semifinals in 2003.
“These are all quality teams,” said Steves. “No matter what happens, we have nothing to hang over our heads. Our guys have already accomplished much.”
Orchard Mesa is key to reaching the semifinals was playing well out the door. Orchard Mesa defeated Tulsa, Oklahoma, 11-2 in the first game of the tournament. On Saturday, Orchard Mesa defeated Albuquerque, New Mexico, 6-3. Orchard Mesa lost its final game of billiards 11-1 Arkadelphia, Arkansas
Orchard Mesa had Monday off while the other teams finished pool play. Steves said the team used the day to practice, but also some rest.
“We practiced hard because we made some mistakes (Sunday),” said Steves. “But we also made sure to take it easy and have a good time because we had almost two days of rest.”
Orchard Mesa is a major challenge in today’s game against Pearland. The representative of East Texas did not lose in pool play, winning its three games by a combined score of 32-9.
“They are very good players,” said Steves. “From what I can say it’s a very athletic team and can work well.”
Orchard Mesa Trey Garcia will start and is all available, except the pitcher Andrew Martinez.
Although Martinez is not available on the mound, which will be called upon to remain constant offensive. Orchard Mesa Martinez has a .571 batting average in the Southwest Regional. Garcia is hitting .500 and .400 in the tournament Christian Chavez regional.
Arkansas is the winner of West Texas and Louisiana in the first semifinal today at 1 pm
The winners of the semifinal games played at 5 pm on Thursday for the championship, also televised by ESPN2. The last four are single elimination regional.
The regional winner advances of Southwest World Series and forth 21-29 August in Williamsport, Pa.
“We have received many calls from people wishing us luck,” said Steves. “We’re just trying to make them feel proud.”
