Lisa Guerrero interview with ARTISTdirect Dolor mosaics and much more. If you’re in LA, check her work tonight!
Where did you get the idea to start creating mosaics?
I was a graphic illustrator for a while. I do illustrations that are pop art, and I’m really influenced by 70 images of Wonder Woman and Betty and Veronica. I have a vision of pop art when it comes to my graphic designs. When I learned to make art tiles a year and a half ago, I thought: “I have not seen too many artists who were married on pop art with mosaic.” The Most mosaics are very classic looking. They are fruit bowls or Italian campaign [laughs]. When I started making mosaics, I thought the topic of women in the kitchen. I this line, called “Btchs kitchen.” I myself am not a cook. The kitchen is a place where I opened a bottle of wine and laugh with my friends or throw together a salad. I started thinking the way society has these images of women in the kitchen that are outmoded and stereotypical image of the 1950 Barefoot and pregnant women near the stove.’s fine I do not. I started illustrations make these different ethnic groups and types of women in the kitchen that are not necessarily traditional. I started doing mosaics of Afro-American, Asian and Latin women. I’m now working on an Indian woman. These women all things impertinent to say and they are not necessarily in the kitchen preparing a gourmet meal. This is where the thought process began. The mosaics themselves are constructed as backsplashes so they can actually be installed in the kitchen. They are waterproof and sealed. You can actually put these in your kitchen, but most people hang them as art. I originally wanted to make a kitchen backsplash that was anything but traditional.
Each piece is very dynamic and has a real depth of meaning.
They are three dimensional, and they are now wine glasses, beer bottles or utensils real. They’re also wearing real jewels! They literally come off the wall. Since they were created primarily on glass and glazed ceramic, they really shine and come to life when the light hits them. It’s fun to see people’s reactions. Everyone is surprised that they are real gems.
This is certainly the next step for the middle of the mosaic.
It’s art industrial grade, and people can actually touch. I will encourage my guests to the gallery not only look but also touch them. It’s great to be able to touch something like that.
Did you listen to music when you create?
I listen to music, and I often mute the news. There are usually 70 years playing classic rock. That’s my thing. Like anything that is power rock chick, especially since the theme is “Btchs kitchen.” If I can throw on an old heart, he gives me somehow. Like the Rolling Stones, The Clash and everything that has some power. When I was young I wanted to be a sports journalist, but because I am a girl that everyone said I could not. I love the empowerment nothing. I was not so much song about dating boys [laughs].
