Lindsey Vonn, (AFP) – American Julia Mancuso won the final women’s downhill race of the season here Wednesday that her compatriot Lindsey Vonn took the World Cup lead to Germany’s Maria Riesch, with three races to go.
Mancuso Olympic silver medalist beat Switzerland Gut and world champion Elisabeth G? Rgl of Austria to claim her fifth career victory four years after her last success.
“I was near the limit at times, quite close to losing control, but I managed,” said Mancuso, who decided to donate part of her winnings to help victims of earthquake Japan.
Olympic downhill champion Vonn finished off the podium in fourth position, but the champion three times World Cup champion took 50 points over rival Crystal Globe Riesch, who finished only 17th.
“It was difficult, visibility was not good and the track was unstable,” said Vonn, who had already secured a fourth consecutive year, the Crystal Globe in the downhill earlier this month.
“I fought, but after my mistake, I knew it would be difficult. But the good thing is that I regain the lead after ousting Maria all winter.”
Riesch 27 points to catch up with Vonn slalom super G, giant slalom and left.
“I had a bad race, but since my injury several years ago, I do not feel comfortable when the visibility is not good,” said the German.
“Since the beginning of the season people ask me about the overall standings after each race. Psychologically, it is the port.”
