Law Enforcement Searches Five Days For Haisong Jiang, A 28-year-old student allegedly caused a security breach that shut down a terminal and caused major delays at New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport, authorities say.
The (Newark) New Jersey Star-Ledger said Sunday that doctoral student Haisong Jiang was charged with defiant trespassing for avoiding airport security tape so he could accompany his girlfriend to a departure gate.
Haisong Jiang, 28, was arrested at his home in Piscataway, N.J. after law enforcement searched for him for five days. He admitted to police for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, which operates Newark Liberty International Airport, that he was the man caught on video breaching airport security Jan 3.
The man sneaked into the secure area after a Transportation Security Administration guard left his post for about one minute, the U.S. network reported.
The video, released by the office of U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., shows a couple kissing outside the C-1 checkpoint. After the woman goes through the security check, she holds up a rope, allowing the man to follow her and they walk toward the boarding gates, holding hands.
Continental Airlines cameras captured the video. Airport cameras that should have recorded the breach did not, and they haven’t worked properly since Dec. 28, ABC said.
Friends say the New Jersey student just wanted a little more time with his girlfriend.
Jiang, 28, came from China in 2004. Hui said he is studying molecular biosciences at the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine, run by Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
He was apparently able to slip into an area that was supposed to be entered only by passengers who had gone through security screening because a Transportation Security Administration guard had stepped away. Jiang was fined $500, court costs and received 100 hours community service.
