Lauren Ambrose Funny Girl, The “Six Feet Under” actress will take the stage Feb. 1. Lauren Ambrose stars as Fanny Brice in the new Broadway production of Funny Girl. Tony Award winner Sher Bartlett, and features music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Bob Merrill and Isobel Lennart’s book will direct funny Girl.

“Let’s face it, it is obviously more than a lot of height to play Fanny Brice, but I feel very honored and excited by the opportunity to be part of this renaissance,” said Ambrose.

Ambrose, 30, is currently appearing in Torchwood Starz: Miracle Day, playing Jilly Kitzinger PR representative. She is probably best known for playing Claire Fisher on Six Feet Under.

This is the first Broadway musical production, since the original opening in 1964. The original production starring Barbra Streisand, who was 21 years old at the time.

“The character is complex, beautiful music and challenging,” said Ambrose. “I can not wait to get into the rehearsal room with Bart’s team is assembling – I wish we could start tomorrow!”

Funny Girl played at the Theatre Centre / Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles from January 15 through February 26, 2012 with the opening scheduled for February 1. The musical will open in spring 2012 on Broadway.

“I think it is wonderful to read, she’s great and would certainly be on the list to anyone. She also has a performance good enough to go now,” he said.
