Latvia Independence Day 1918

November 18, 2011 by staff

Latvia Independence Day 1918, I greet you on this most significant day for Latvia, because it was the 18th November 1918 when the newly independent state was born on the coast of the Baltic Sea in the very heart of Europe.
Latvia marks today 93 years of independence, which was interrupted from 1940 for 50 years during occupation.
We are facing today a radically new and unprecedented situation which demands political wisdom and a responsible approach towards work . We are living in an age of confusion in the global economy, and there are increasing convincing signs of a new wave of the crisis. We must learn from past mistakes that the crisis does not reoccur.
The opening of the Office of the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) in Riga, the BEREC Office is a recently created European Union (EU) agency and will be the first EU level institution located in Latvia and a great diplomatic achievement for Latvia. Latvia is working towards the goals directed at general liberalization of trade, increase of Latvia’s external competitiveness and strengthening traditionally democratic values.
Latvia has actively shaped good relationship with its neighbouring countries, both at the bilateral level and through membership in regional organizations such as the Council of Baltic Sea States and the Baltic Council of Ministers. By doing so, Latvia has contributed to the resolution of key problems in the region: energy security, environmental pollution, illegal migration and t*rror*sm. Latvia is being praised by Europeans who see ours as a success story . We are being seen as an example for those countries which have found themselves in deep crisis and came out of it more stronger than before as every single member of the society was willing to contribute for example the entire bureaucracy reduced its salaries voluntarily by 30%.
The country’s development has allowed the people of Latvia to make broader use of the opportunities afforded by the present-day international environment. Latvian business people have commenced operations in regions of the world which, just a few years ago, were all but inaccessible to Latvian representatives.
