Lance ArmstrongLance Armstrong, Seven times Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong is considering competing in the Xterra USA Championship September 24, Snowbasin Ski Resort. In a surprise visit, Armstrong spent three hours at Snowbasin on Wednesday, exploring the course for the event.

Armstrong cycling along a distance of 18 miles of Pineview Reservoir and Snowbasin then completed a six-mile road run to help decide whether to participate in the championship, said Mike Caldwell, founder and former president of the Foundation Ogden-based META.

The foundation is a sponsor for the Xterra USA Championship, which is racing triathlon involves swimming, mountain biking and trail running.

Caldwell, who is also a candidate for mayor of Ogden, said Armstrong’s visit was not linked to his campaign and was organized by TEAM Unlimited LLC, a Honolulu-based corporation that created Xterra.

“If people think I have the strength for him (Armstrong) here for a candidacy for mayor, which is absolutely hilarious,” Caldwell said Thursday. “There’s no way he would give his name to that.”

In addition to Caldwell, others joined Armstrong in the field of U.S. Xterra Championship including professional triathlete Jimmy Riccitello and Steve Andrus, director of events at Snowbasin.

Caldwell said it was a thrill to ride and race with Armstrong. “I was honored to participate.”

Caldwell said he was notified Monday by team officials that a famous Unlimited but not identified, the individual would be at Snowbasin on Wednesday to see the Xterra course.

Armstrong plane landed in Ogden-Hinckley Airport around 11:30 am and left around 4 pm on Wednesday en route to Calgary, Canada, said Caldwell.

Armstrong was seen by several people as he bicycles in Snowbasin, but no one bothered him, Caldwell said.

“He was impressed with the beautiful and the course was nice.”

It would be a big boost for Armstrong to participate in the next Xterra USA Championship, Caldwell said.

“If he participated, Ogden would be the first headquarters to welcome pitched since his recent retirement.” said. “He has not made a decision, but would like to receive it.”
