There was some intrigue behind this year’s Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. Takeru Kobayashi, who has won six straight titles from 2001-2006, did not participate in the challenge this year because of a contractual dispute with Major League Eating. He looked into the stands.
Joey Chestnut won the competition on Sunday, held at Coney Island, New York. He ate 54 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. Meanwhile, police said Kobayashi was arrested on charges of rebellion, by interfering with a police officer and disorderly conduct after attempting to make his way on stage after the event.
For the more health conscious, the 41st Annual Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race 10K in Atlanta, Georgia – which attracts runners from around the world – has served as an alternative Fourth of July. Approximately 55,000 runners hit the pavement Sunday morning during which drove through the streets of Atlanta.
Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia won the race this year in a photo finish, beating Kenya, Peter Kirui in a time of 27 minutes, 56 seconds, the AJC reported.
Not all of Independence Day were on American soil.
Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to Iraq, delivered a speech during a ceremony for the nationalization of the troops at Camp Victory. U.S. soldiers at the ceremony represented about 60 countries where they were born, before becoming citizens of the United States on Sunday.
“I can not think of a more stirring example of patriotism that men and women volunteer … to fight for their country, putting their lives on the line, and some of your brothers, who lost their lives and members to fight on foreign soil against their adopted country. You are remarkable, “said Biden.
Biden added: “On this Fourth of July weekend, I remember that you have carried the torch of our founding fathers, who they have turned 234 years ago, you conducted worldwide in this case in a country that is not yourself, in a uniform that represents a nation that until now was not yours. ”
Back at the White House, more than 1,200 members of the armed forces and their families were guests of honor at the celebration there.
In addition to a barbecue and a chance to watch the fireworks on the National Mall, President Barack Obama and the First Lady Michelle Obama will host a USO concert on the lawn of the White House South .
