Kazakhstan Anthem Borat

Kazakhstan Anthem Borat, Kuwaiti officials were left red-faced after Sacha Baron Cohen’s offensive spoof Kazakh anthem from his 2006 comedy Borat was played by mistake during a medal ceremony at the Arab Shooting Championships.

The Associated Press reports that Maria Dmitrienko won a gold medal for Kazakhstan at the championships and can be seen bemused in a YouTube clip as the spoof anthem is played.

Kazakh news agency Tengri quoted team coach Anvar Yunusmetov as saying organisers had downloaded various countries’ national anthems from the Internet.

Ilyas Omarov, a spokesman for Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry, told the ITAR-Tass news agency that the incident “is, of course, a scandal and demands a thorough investigation, which we intend to conduct”.

Organisers of the championships expressed “deep sorrow” for the mistake and the awards ceremony was repeated with the correct anthem.
