Karl Malone, Hall of Fame with Karl Malone and John Stockton as anchors, Sloan has taken two teams to the finals but lost both times to Michael Jordan’s Bulls. He ranks third in the NBA coaching wins with 1221.
“It’s amazing that he is driven as many years as he has without interruption,”said Lakers coach Phil Jackson.” I was fortunate to have breaks in my career ‘ coach. I believe that coaching 23 years, there is probably a thing of the energy where it takes energy from you. There is a moment where you can not put more in a team.”
The choice to leave came three days after Sloan signed a contract extension a year, but his relationship with Williams had become tense.
“I’m curious to know why,”said Ray Allen. “I think everyone curious to know why. If he resigned on his own terms, if they sought to move in another direction. Who knows?
“He led such a time, Malone and Stockton before them even now. It has been around a long time. He had a good race.”
The Jazz has only had three coaches since his arrival in Utah from New Orleans in 1979.
(AFP) – The Utah Jazz NBA, playing without Jerry Sloan at the helm as head coach for the first time in more than 22 years, fell to Phoenix 95-83.
Sloan was a fixture on the bench for 26 years and Jazz was in his 23rd season as head coach – the longest active in major U.S. pro sports – until he suddenly resigned Thursday.
The move came a day after Sloan met with the Chief Kevin O’Connor, Jazz, after a 91-86 home loss to Chicago.
At halftime of that game, Jazz player Deron Williams in conflict with Sloan, but the star goalie denied having issued a “him or me” ultimatum to the club.
“Maybe arguing was the last shot, if I’m there, guilty of that,” Williams said. “But I think anyone who thinks I could force the coach to resign Sloan’s crazy.
“He is stronger than that and, personally, if I said to him, he would probably go tell me to go do something.”
Sloan said he had just lost the energy intensity of the coach, he believes that the job requires.
Williams has received enthusiastic applause when he was introduced before Friday’s game, but there were also a handful of boos from the crowd.
He had been critical of Sloan in the past on the practice of coaching and requires study.
One of Sloan’s most famous former players, Hall of Famer Karl Malone made it clear before the game that he had no time for critics of Sloan and his “old school” tactics, they are actors or experts.
“It’s like saying that the game passed by Phil Jackson,” Malone said, comparing the coach Sloan veteran Lakers. “Old school worked. The players (have) got to buy into the system.”
Malone, who lives in Louisiana, had made plans to attend Friday’s game because his children had school holidays.
“We planned this trip and now I never knew all this would happen,” said Malone’s resignation Sloan. “I do not know the details, but the way things were passing was not good.”
And Malone said he did not think Sloan, 68, disappeared voluntarily.
“The guys I know and love, he does not leave or anything,” Malone said.
The Suns’ victory spoiled debut as coach Ty Corbin Jazz.
Steve Nash scored 18 points and 10 assists to lift Phoenix, which improved to 26-25.
Corbin, who played for the Jazz in 1990 and was an assistant coach since 2004, received a warm ovation as he took his place on the bench in Utah, although signs lamenting the departure Sloan, as ” Sloan Come Home “, the points on the booths.
Williams and CJ Miles scored 19 points apiece, but the Jazz have now lost 11 of their last 15.
Utah led 56-44 at halftime, but Phoenix stormed back in the third quarter, when Robin Lopez had 11 points and five rebounds. The Suns dominated the Jazz 51-27 in the second half.
The Jazz also lost Andrei Kirilenko to a sprained right ankle in the second quarter. His departure has left them with only nine healthy players.
A strained calf has sidelined raja Bell and Ronnie Price was not in uniform because of a sprained tip. Francisco Elson played with a knee inflammation.
