Karilyn Bales I Too Want To Know What Happened, The wife of the US soldier held over the slayings of 16 Afghan villagers has offered condolences to the victims’ families and says she too wants to know what happened.

Karilyn Bales issued a statement through a Seattle lawyer on Monday, for the first time offering her comments on a case that has threatened to upend American policy over the decade-old war.

Her husband, Staff Sergeant Robert Bales of Lake Tapps, Washington, is being detained at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. He has not yet been charged.

“What happened on the night of March 11 in Kandahar Province was a terrible and heartbreaking tragedy,” Karilyn Bales says in the statement.

“My family including my and Bob’s extended families are all profoundly sad. We extend our condolences to all the people of the Panjawai District, our hearts go out too all of them, especially to the parents, brothers, sisters and grandparents of the children who perished.
