Justina Cardosa Police ChiefJustina Cardosa Police Chief, A suspended North Providence police chief has pleaded not guilty to charges he stole more than $700 from the purse of a former Rhode Island stripper.

Defense lawyer John Harwood said yesterday that Colonel John Whiting of North Attleboro, Mass., entered his plea in Providence County Superior Court. His arraignment was initially scheduled for Dec. 16.

 Investigators say Whiting, 57, stole $714 from a purse belonging to Justina Cardoso, 21, following a police chase Aug. 28 and then sought to cover it up. He is charged with larceny over $500 and two counts of solicitation of obstruction of justice. He remains free on condition that he pay $10,000 if he misses a court date. A pretrial conference will be held Feb. 16. Whiting is suspended without pay.
