Joplin Missouri TornadoJoplin Missouri Tornado, President Obama was in Ireland on Monday, kicking off a tour in one week across Europe, but he is the follow-up after Missouri, a tornado that killed at least 89 people Sunday.

The president received several updates on the tornado damage along its flight to Ireland, White House official told reporters. Instructed his staff to keep updated and stay in close coordination with state and local authorities in the future.

Obama called the governor of Missouri, Jay Nixon this morning to personally extend his condolences and express all of Joplin families affected by severe tornadoes are in our thoughts and prayers, “according to White House spokesman Nicholas Shapiro. “The president assured the governor that the FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Agency] would remain in close contact and coordination with state and local authorities.”

The president has directed FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate travel to Missouri to ensure that the state has the support you need. Further, in anticipation of requests for assistance from FEMA Incident Management Assistance Team (IMAT) is coming to Joplin, said the White House. This team will work with FEMA officials in Missouri, as well as state and local officials to identify the needs of disaster response.

“Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in tornadoes and bad weather that affected Joplin, Missouri, and communities across the Midwest today. We commend the heroic efforts for those who have responded and are working to help their friends and neighbors in this very difficult time. In my address, FEMA is working with the state of the affected areas and local officials to support response and recovery efforts, and the federal government is willing to help our fellow citizens, as needed. “
