John Tortorella $20,000: John Tortorella’s Big Fine, On Friday, Sporting News’ Jesse Spector and Sean Gentille trade emails about the NHL. Today’s topics: John Tortorella’s $20,000 fine and Ryane Clowe’s escape for poking away the puck from San Jose’s bench.
Jesse: It’s disappointing that the final day of the regular season doesn’t feature any playoff spots up for grabs, but we do get to see what amounts to a one-game playoff for the Pacific Division title and No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, with the Kings visiting the Sharks in the back end of their home-and-home series.
The matchup in Los Angeles on Thursday night was a wild one, a 6-5 shootout win for San Jose that featured quite the performance by Ryane Clowe-a Gordie Howe Hat Trick plus another fight and a very strong defensive play to break up an odd-man rush for the Kings.
The most impressive thing about Clowe’s late bid for the Selke Trophy was that he managed to deny a scoring chance when he wasn’t even on the ice, as from his seat on the Sharks bench, he stuck out his stick and knocked the puck away. That’s supposed to be an interference penalty, but Clowe got away with it, and the NHL is powerless to suspend him. Not that the league should issue supplemental discipline for a play like that, but it’s just another incident this season that makes the league’s on-ice officials look bad.
