A spokesman for the medical examiner says 47-year Mississippi native was found dead at his home in San Francisco Monday.
Charles Cecil, the cause of death has not been determined, but the family said Dye suffered apparent heart failure.
As news of the death Dye began to spread Thursday afternoon, his “Touched by an Angel” co-star Valerie Bertinelli posted a message to him on his Twitter account: “Dear, sweet John Dye based in peace. ”
At the University of Memphis Mainstage, Dye’s early work included the martial arts film “The Best of the Best” and small roles on “Murder, She Wrote” and other television programs.
He landed the role of the Angel of Death on “Touched by an Angel” in 1994 and appeared in all nine seasons of the CBS series.
WREG-TV Memphis, the father of Dye, Jim Dye, said his son the actor “was very generous, had a lot of really good causes he supports, Make a Wish Foundation research, AIDS.”
Cleveland Daily Banner reported Thursday that while living in the community as a young, Dye has been involved in a theater group for children in the 1990s helped restore.
