John Daly, The American two-time major winner put six or seven balls – officials admitted they were not sure of the exact number – in the water on the 11th hole before heading for the exit.

‘When u run out of balls u run out of balls. yes I shook my players partners hands & signed my card w/rules official,’ Daly tweeted by way of explanation.

‘It’s very disappointing and certainly unprofessional and I’m extremely bitter and disappointed he’s treated this championship this way,’ said tournament director Trevor Herden.

‘It’s unacceptable. I would say this will be the last time we see John Daly.’

Two years ago at the same event Daly grabbed a spectator’s phone and smashed it against a tree after accusing the fan of getting in his face.

Of those who did complete their rounds, Australian Jarrod Lyle led with a seven-under-par 65.

Tiger Woods is lurking three strokes back and tournament favourite Adam Scott is also well placed after carding a three-under 69 that included a spectacular albatross at the par-five eighth.
