Jeremy Lin Ben Jerry

Jeremy Lin Ben Jerry, What could have erupted into “stereotypical-yogurt-gate’’ wasn’t much of a “-gate’’ at all. Last week, the Ben & Jerry’s store in Harvard Square tried to pay a clever tribute to New York Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin by offering “Taste the Lin-Sanity,’’ a new frozen yogurt flavor featuring swirls of lychee – a fruit sometimes used in Chinese cuisine – and crumbled fortune cookies. The gesture was well-meaning, but the result was awkward, and not just because the fortune cookies got soggy. While Lin’s Asian-American background is clearly part of what makes him an unusual figure in the NBA, so is his Harvard degree. And while a celebrity’s heritage is a fair subject of public discussion, many people bristle about being defined solely in ethnic terms.

Luckily, the yogurt controversy began and ended with raised eyebrows. Recognizing that the fortune cookies might have come off as an impolite play on stereotypes, Ben & Jerry’s decided to use waffle cookies instead. Customers seemed happy with the change, and were willing to give the store the benefit of the doubt. If Ben & Jerry’s has occasion to celebrate Lin in the future, it’ll surely know better – and complement the lychee flavor with little chocolate “Veritas’’ shields or crimson-colored sprinkles.
