Jeff Byrd Bristol, Trevor Bayne and the Wood Brothers No. 21 Motorcraft / Quick Lane Ford Fusion line up 19th Sunday Jeff Byrd at Bristol Motor Speedway. This will be the first resident Knoxville Sprint Cup start at his home track.
Bayne said his qualifying effort was somewhat hampered by having to go back and forth between Fusion No. 21 and No. 16 Ford Mustang he will run in the Nationwide Series on Saturday.
“I think I could have more out of it if I would not have to carry my car the country,” said Bayne. “The cars are so different, I’d say more here than any other track because of how they load and power, so as not to saturate the area.”
Crew chief Donnie Wingo Bayne agreed that busy schedule was a challenge. He said he was not enthusiastic about the effort of qualifying, but he was happy.
“We picked up 10 points in practice,” said Wingo. “We were able to save our speed practice, and many other guys have not been able to do so.”
Bayne fastest lap in practice was at 126,411 miles per hour, and he qualified at 126,453 mph.
Wingo said the team made progress on setting the chassis of the Motorcraft / Quick Lane Ford Fusion, but did not really listen to the perfection. “We never really managed the car released,” he said.
The next big challenge facing Bayne and Wingo – and the rest of the drivers and teams on the ground – adapts to a compound of the tires on the new law will be made available to teams on Saturday morning. The switch is made after a tire was right up the strings in practice on Friday.
Wingo said he would not really know how to respond after the new tire Bayne did a few laps in practice on Saturday. “I really have no idea,” he said. “We’ll have to work through it.”
The veteran crew chief said he plans to run practice laps on Saturday with the right tires and some old with the new compound in order to obtain a good balance on the manipulation of car. Each team will receive one set of tires new compound for practice, but a full allowance for the 500.
The Jeff Byrd Presented by Food City are preparing to receive the green flag just after 13 pm on Sunday, with TV coverage on FOX.
