Jay Severin Fired

April 6, 2011 by USA Post

Jay Severin Fired, Jay Severin, the highly paid talk show, whose provocative comments on the air two times resulted in the suspension, was dismissed on WTKK-FM (96.9) today. Severin was fired for failing to maintain an “appropriate level of civility and adhere to a standard that respects our listeners and the general public,” said a statement released by the Greater Media Inc., which owns WTKK. “Unfortunately, it is clear at several points in the last two years that Jay was either unwilling or unable to maintain our standards in the air. That’s why we made the decision to end our relationship.”

Severin, who signed a seven-year contract in 2006 that pays him and about 1 million a year, was suspended last week for saying on air that he had slept with years ago employed women. “That is not the purpose for which they were hired,” he said while discussing the case of a CEO who was sued for sexual harassment. “I do not think of myself as a freak or weird in any way by that. All that a young man who was the head, and I did because I could not.”

Severin was removed from the radio in 2009 after Mexican immigrants called “primitive” leeches “, and” exporting “women with mustaches and VD.” He returned to the air a month later, apologizing for his “cruel hurtful and evil” comment. Severin did not return calls today, but his lawyers, George Tobias and Laura Studen.

“It’s pretty clear that this is only the station’s interest in saving money,” Studen. “Jay is the youngest paid at the station and you have a problem of skills, so they look in your contract. Jay is going to follow his rights under his contract. He was fired without cause. This is a thinly veiled attempt to get out from under his contract. ”

For now, Michael Bower, who was co-host on the show occasionally Severin 2-6 pm, will take charge of the station, while reviewing its programming options for the time interval. By midafternoon yesterday, Severin had already been removed from the website of the WTKK.

It had been a tumultuous tenure Severin, who arrived in the local airwaves in 2000, described as a libertarian and “Rock ‘n’ roll Republican” with a penchant for throwing rhetorical grenades. He used an epithet to refer too raw, Hillary Clinton; Jesse Jackson called “a pmp, a race hustler,” and said that in his world, “the poor and stupid would starve.”
