‘Jaws’ Ride Closing At Universal Studios, The iconic theme park attraction is preparing for its last ride. Universal Studios Orlando representatives announced Friday that JAWS! will be shut down Jan. 2 to make room for a new undisclosed attraction. JAWS! is based on the 1975 film by Steven Spielberg and was one of the original attractions when Universal Studios Orlando opened in 1990.
“JAWS! has been an amazing attraction and an important part of our history, said Ayson Lundell, senior manager of publicity at Universal Orlando, in an email statement. “But we must always work to provide new, innovative, entertainment experiences for our guests. We know that JAWS! holds a special place in the hearts of our guests and we have put a great deal of thought and care into this decision.”
JAWS! is a water ride that featured a robotic shark terrorizing a group of tourists during a boat tour.
JAWS! is the main attraction of the Amity area in Universal, modeled during a Fourth of July celebration in the New England town where the film takes place. The area will be shut down and workers will be reassigned to other areas of Universal Orlando until the area reopens with the new ride.
“I don’t think that ride will be terribly missed by a whole lot of people, said Leigh Caldwell, blogger for Clermont-based ThemeParkMom.com. “It was a good ride, but it had been there since the park opened and hadn’t had an update. If they needed space for something else, that was probably a wise decision to close that one.”
