Japan Radiation Leak, Geographical distance New Zealand from a potential radiation leak in Japan to protect from any possible follow, says an expert. A second explosion at a nuclear facility in Fukushima expressed concern about a possible radiation leak on the north coast of Japan, which was devastated by a powerful earthquake, and tsunami on Friday.

Dr. Ron Smith of the University of Waikato, International Relations and Security Program has visited the plant before, and told Close Up, even in the unlikely event of a radiation leak, the northern hemisphere suffer the fall, not New Zealand.

Officials say hydrogen explosion this afternoon at Reactor No. 3 has left the containment vessel around it intact and Smith said that this bodes well.

“I expect the damage to the soul that makes it unusable, but not a health threat.”

He said that the worst scenario would be a break in the stainless steel 20 cm thick shielding around the core, but said much work had been done to prevent this.

“There is an incredibly strong containment structure around the reactor and thousands of hours have been [for] so that the heat production has decreased.”

He said the plant automatically shut down when the earthquake.

“The factors to generate heat (inside the containment vessel) is residual, and to do with short lifed isotopes that are left in the fuel.”

He explained, whether an explosion inside the nucleus would happen, it would have occurred to date.

Low-level radiation has been detected outside the plant, but Smith said that nuclear material has been published to date has dissipated into the atmosphere.

“The dose that you might get is not really different than you get from the atmosphere or the Earth.”

Experts say levels should pass something like a thousand times before real fears are justified.
