Jama Masjid, Two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire at random into one of the entrances to the Jama Masjid here on Sunday, killing two Taiwanese tourists injured and caused panic, police said. A man has been arrested by police in connection with the shooting.
The attackers fired at least 10 times against a group of tourists alight from a luxury bus outside the mosque giant sandstone red 16th century in the old city.
The suspect is from Vasant Kunj area of South Delhi. According to police, was arrested on suspicion by the Special Rapporteur Cell Crime Branch on the motorcycle, a black color Hero Honda Passion, used in the crime belonged to him.
Police said the motorcycle, bearing registration number DL 4S AJ 0496, was registered in his name.
The man riding a passenger in the motorcycle opened fire, police said. The men escaped through the narrow streets ringing the Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in India.
Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat of Delhi, told IANS that the attack took place at 11.30 am outside the gate number 3. He said the identity of the attackers was not known.
Tourists injured are between 38 and 40, a police official said.
Meanwhile, the main witness in the case, Salim, a rickshaw puller, is being questioned by police in the Jama Masjid police station.
Salim told reporters: “I was standing at a distance when I saw these two men with white skin and high on a bicycle. They reached the bus and started firing indiscriminately as the tourists were on the bus.”
According to Bhagat, security has been tightened in the capital and there is heavy barricades around Jama Masjid.
The injured tourists are recovering in the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) hospital in the city center.
The attack came despite a high level of security here in the
period prior to the Commonwealth Games attract athletes and officials from 71 countries and territories.
The Jama Masjid receives a large number of Indian and foreign tourists daily, the number of climbing on Sunday.
