Craig, the narrator, is 15 and lives with his family in a Brooklyn neighborhood of upper middle class. He attends the prestigious Executive Pre-Professional High School, after studying hard to gain admission. Once admitted, however, he is overwhelmed by intense pressure from the academic school. His stress eventually manifests itself in an eating disorder, use of pot, sleep patterns affected, and suicidal thoughts. After he stopped taking medication prescribed by his psychiatrist, his depression grows until, unable to repel his suicidal thoughts, it calls 800-SUICIDE and is admitted to a psychiatric hospital nearby. He met many other patients, some friendly, some recluse or delusional, and is supported and encouraged by her family and school principal after learning of his hospitalization. Craig meets a woman, Noelle, who faces a history of sexual abuse by cutting her face with scissors. In isolation from the outside world, and with the help of Noelle, Craig confronts the sources of his anxiety and regains its health. During his convalescence, Craig experiences with art, particularly stylized maps, and discover he has a lot of natural talent and ability.
