Iphone Tracking, Apple devices seem to be tracking locations of their owners and storing data on the whereabouts of people without their knowledge, according to a report released Wednesday at a site called iPhone Tracker.
Unauthorized monitoring began in June 2010 when the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system was released, according to two researchers who say they discovered a hidden tracking file and put it out of concern for users.
Apple has not responded to the allegations.
The researchers have published an online program that allows any iPhone users see a map of their location in time, dating back to June, when iOS 4.0 was released.
Developers of the program, appears as Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden, said these data are stored in the iPhone 3G a person or IPAD and enabled on computers that are synchronized with the devices. There is no evidence, they say, that data is also transmitted to Apple as it is collected.
“The cell phone providers collect similar data, almost inevitably, as part of its operations, but is kept behind your firewall. It usually takes a court order to access it while it is available to anyone who can get their hands the phone or computer, “they write.
“On the passive registration of your location without your permission, Apple have made it possible for anyone of a jealous spouse, a private investigator to obtain a detailed picture of their movements.”
Location data appear to be picked at random intervals over time, using cell phone towers to triangulate your approximate location write.
They say that this data is stored in a file called “consolidated.db” and is “unclear” why Apple could collect this information.
“A guess would be that they have the new functions of the mind that requires a history of its location, but that’s speculation. The fact that is transferred through the device to restore or migrate evidence that data collection is not accidental “, type in the iPhone Site Tracker.
Some iPhone users were outraged by the news.
Sam Biddle, an editor at Gizmodo, which is used to download the program to chart their recent whereabouts, which he said, was a terrifying experience.
“This is a map of all sites that have been in recent months. Everywhere,” writes technology at that site. “I do not wear a tracking device. The FBI does not send goons in unmarked vans to track me. All I did was to use an iPhone.”
He adds: “. The very annoyingly accurate data although apparently based on the tower triangulation, not GPS location (which means it is not safe location services off), the map can be generated with mapping software security visual duo released my life since the day I bought my iPhone on July 4. Everywhere I have been. Bus trips home. Travel by train to visit relatives. Holidays. Places I’d forgotten that had gone further. Zoom in on the giant New York spot, and you can see my travels, block by block.
“All my personal and professional life – documented by a phone that did not know was also a tracking device everything is accessible -. Where I’ve been, and when you actually have nothing to hide, what is. Why I do not mind sharing map, but just not right to have another choice in the matter; I do not want this information with me bouncing in my pocket ”
Others, including Kashmir Hill Forbes writer, wonder if this feature is “cool or creepy.” She decided to “cool”, writing that the program is “a persistent, widespread, secret location every day.”
