“The first day of pre-orders for the iPhone 4S have been more that of any new product that Apple has started and we are delighted that the customers love them as much as we 4S iPhone,” said Philip Schiller, senior vice president of marketing product worldwide.
Online and phone pre-orders for the iPhone 4S began early Friday, marking Apple’s first, major product launch since the chief executive Tim Cook took the reins of the company. This time, the iPhone will be available from three U.S. companies, including for the first time, Sprint Nextel Corp.
AT & T Inc. said it had “more than 200,000 pre-orders within 12 hours just to” make the iPhone 4S “The launch of the iPhone’s most successful we’ve had.”
A spokesman for Verizon Wireless, said the executives were “satisfied with the sales and ordering process.”
U.S. Apple stores will begin selling the iPhone 4S at 8 am local time on Friday. That will extend to 22 countries later this month.
The reaction to the 4S is critical to Apple, since it is an indication of whether the company can continue to generate the desire of their devices.
Smartphones are Apple’s single largest product category of income. Consumer demand for the iPhone 4S can be subject to a flood of emotions surrounding the death last week of former CEO Steve Jobs.
Analysts had a moderate reaction to the phone after Apple introduced on Tuesday, with some predicting that the company lost potential customers by not modifying the exterior design of the phone, or calling it an iPhone 5.
The new iPhone looks similar to its predecessor, but sports a fast microprocessor and new voice-activated software.
Apple is the world’s largest single manufacturer of smart phones, but faces increasing competition from suppliers of phones running on Google Inc. ‘s Android software.
With the smartphone market in rapid expansion, anlysts said the leadership of any company could easily come and go based on new alliances, advanced technologies and consumer preferences.
Nokia Corp. is working on new devices running Microsoft Corp. software, while Google is preparing to release an update to its Android software.
