Intracoastal Waterway, Florida

April 16, 2014 by

Intracoastal Waterway, Florida, A homeowner, on Singer Island in Palm Beach County, chased what she thought was a stray dog off of her waterfront property on Friday afternoon and saw the animal jump into the Intracoastal Waterway reported Terri Parker, reporter for wpbf.com.

Thinking the dog might be in trouble, Palm Beach Animal Care and Control were called to rescue the animal. Dave Hitzig, Executive Director of Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, showed up when rescuers figured out the animal standing on the ledge under the dock as the tide continued to rise, was no dog, but a coyote.

So how does one rescue a coyote from the Intracoastal?

Hitzig used a tranquilizer dart on the coyote and had to wait until the sedation took effect. That could have been very dangerous for both humans and the animal as the coyote’s nose dropped into the water, but the undaunted Hitzig managed to leash the animal and scoop him up into a net.

Brought up onto the dock, the coyote survived his ordeal, and after being examined was determined to be fine.

The lucky young one was later released on private property further out west – where coyotes are away from the water.

Great job Dave Hitzig.

Busch Wildlife Sanctuary’s mission is education, rehabilitation and, whenever possible, re-release into the wild. Between 400 to 500 animals, predominantly those native to Florida, call the Jupiter based sanctuary home.

If you encounter injured wildlife, please bring them to the sanctuary for proper care.
