Imagine, Create, And Participate. Together, these three words are the theme of First Night Monterey 2011.
“First Night is a celebration of imagination because people do many activities with many artistic and artistic experiences in one night,” said Ellen Martin, executive director of the annual festival in downtown Monterey. “First Night is all about participation – and you use your imagination it’s about dreaming of the New Year when you come to the first night, you imagine, you create, you participate …”

Martin said it is this diversity of artistic experience that keeps people returning to the first night, year by year.

Although it is generally not the person at the other end of the line when people call for information when she was in the office a few weeks ago, she decided to answer the phone. Not only did she provide information to people, but has started an informal inquiry.

“I asked how many times people had been at First Night,” said Martin. “To most people it was not once or twice – they were the first several nights.” When she asked what kept people coming back each year, the answer was always the same: First Night is a rare opportunity to see so many dance and musical performances and art exhibitions in a variety of different venues in one place. It is also a place not only to observe art, music and dance, but he creates. It is an event where all generations can rejoice.
