Immaculate Conception, Police have charged a man with breaking into the Immaculate Conception church at least five times in recent weeks.
Nelson Moura, 21, of 340 School St. was arrested as police say he fled the building during an attempted burglary. His address is only a few hundred meters from the church, located at the corner of Canton and the school.
Moura was arrested in Stoughton District Court on Monday and the place and 5,000 in bail.
Alarm system of the church alerted police to a burglary at 20h43 on Friday. Officers responded within moments. Officer Joe DeSousa entered the dark church, shone a flashlight and, according to police, found the suspect wore a black jacket and black baseball cap.
The suspect bolted to the front of the church on School Street, where John Lydston patrol was waiting.
Lydston chased the suspect and arrested.
According to police, reports indicate that more than 2,000 and the value of cash and property were stolen from the church since the beginning of November.
Moura was arrested in Stoughton District Court Monday on charges of possession of burglary tools, malicious destruction of property valued at over $ 250 and and five counts of breaking and entering at night to commit a crime.
He must return to court Jan. 5.
