Iliza Shlesinger,Comedian Demetri Martin always has some important things to think about.
In fact, there are so many running through his stream of consciousness that the entire concept — or thought pattern — became a variety show on Comedy Central.
Titled “Important Things with Demetri Martin,” each episode focuses on a single topic based on his unique point of view.
Something else Martin has on his mind is a performance at the Lakewood Civic Auditorium on Friday, Oct. 16. Tickets for his 8 p.m. show are priced at $35 and are available online at www.livenation.com or by calling 877-598-8703.
Martin’s outlook and comedy material actually come from an intelligent point of view. He only decided to pursue stand-up after studying law at New York University.
Dropping out before he graduated, he hit the comedy club circuit and has performed in most of the English-speaking countries around the world. He also has won awards for comedy in America, Scotland and Australia.
Martin was a staff writer for “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” and has appeared on quite a few of the episodes both onstage and as a “plant” in the audience.
His CD, “These Are Jokes,” was released in 2006 and his “Trendspotting with Demetri Martin” has been a featured segment on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” since 2005. Most recently he starred in the feature film, “Taking Woodstock.”
Lakewood Civic Auditorium is located inside Lakewood High School at 14100 Franklin Blvd. For directions and more information, visit www.livenation.com.
Last comic winner
When Iliza Shlesinger won the sixth season of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” she set two records. She was the first female and the youngest person to ever walk away with the grand prize.
After recently finishing “The Last Comic Standing Tour,” she is touring the country again as a solo headliner. She will appear at The Cleveland Improv beginning Friday and running through Sunday, Sept. 27.
A native of Dallas, Shlesinger attended Emerson College in Boston where she was the only female member of the campus sketch group, Jimmy’s Traveling All Stars.
After graduating she moved to Los Angeles to pursue stand-up and in 2007 won the Internet contest, “Myspace’s So You Think You’re Funny.” The site featured her as “Girl of the Week” and she appeared on the E! Network’s “Forbes Celebrity 100,” TV Guide’s “America’s Next Top Producer,” “Byron Allen’s Comics Unleashed” and History Channel’s “History of a Joke.”
She is currently the co-host of “The Weakly News with Iliza and Alexis” on TheStreamTV.
In 2008, Shlesinger was selected to perform at the Montreal Just For Laughs Comedy Festival in the prestigious “New Faces” showcase. Her most recent television credits include “The Soup,” “Chelsea Lately” and as host of Pl**yboy TV’s “Gadget Or The Girl.”
“Children are smarter than any of us. Know how I know that? I don’t know one childe with a full-time job and children.”
