Ian Thorpe: I’m Gay

July 13, 2014 by

Ian Thorpe: I’m Gay, Swimming great Ian Thorpe, who won five Olympic gold medals at the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Summer Games, has revealed to an interviewer that he is gay, Australian newspaper the Daily Telegraph reports.

According to the Telegraph, the 31-year-old Australian confirms his sexuality for the first time in an exclusive interview with Britain’s Sir Michael Parkinson set to air Sunday on Australia’s Channel 10 network.

The interview also reportedly covers Thorpe’s highly-publicized battle with depression and admission into a rehab facility earlier this year.

The highly-decorated Australian Olympian has long had to contend with speculation surrounding his sexuality. The Sydney Morning Herald quoted a passage from Thorpe’s 2012 autobiography, This is Me, in which he stated, ”For the record, I am not gay and all my sexual experiences have been straight. I’m attracted to women, I love children and aspire to have a family one day … I know what it’s like to grow up and be told what your sexuality is, then (realizing) that it’s not the full reality. I was accused of being gay before I knew who I was.”

The Telegraph goes on to report that Thorpe’s sit-down interview with Parkinson “includes a full admission from Thorpe that he is gay despite having dated women in the past.”
