Sally Kipyego compatriot Cheruiyot could not review a call sprint to the line and took the silver with Linet Masai take the bronze. Another Kenyan, Priscah Cherono, finished fourth.
It was the second podium sweep of the day for Kenya, which also took home gold, silver and bronze in the women’s marathon on Saturday morning.
Cheruiyot, who took the title of 5000 in Berlin two years ago, won in a time of 30:48.98 personal best after hitting the front with two laps to go.
“I’m very happy, and I also put my best time,” Cheruiyot said.
American Shalane Flanagan took the field along the first 3,000 m, but on lap nine the tall, slender Masai, who won the title two years ago, injects a burst of pace and strung the field behind her.
With rivals sitting on his shoulder Masai tried to encourage them to take charge of the pacemaker, but eventually the effort, said in his closing in the 800 meters and was overtaken by Cheruiyot and Kipyego.
