Help! My Dinner Is …

Help! My Dinner Is …, Even though Thanksgiving is a week away, hundreds of families are already giving thanks for their holiday meals.
Baskets filled with turkey, cornbread, stuffing and juice were handed out Thursday to 100 families of the Montana Vista community.
“This is exciting,” resident Valerie Reyes said. “Every year, for as long as I can remember, my grandpa has been getting our turkey so that we can have a Thanksgiving. And this year, these dinners will help us especially because right now my family is having a hard time finding a job. It’s just been tough.”
In the community of more than 2,000 households, families who received the turkey dinners were chosen based on their needs and whether they were active voters.
The turkey giveaways began in 1990 when Martina “Tina” Silva was first elected as the precinct chairwoman for her community.
“I started to knock on doors and find out what the needs of the community really were,” Silva said. “Here in Montana Vista there are families with greater needs, and we were able to reach 100.”
This year was a challenge for Silva, who recently had surgery and had trouble getting around.
“But somehow, by the grace of God, I was able to do it,” Silva said. “I said I had to. Those families needed to get their turkeys.”
Resident Rosa Garcia waited for her first Thanksgiving basket. Until this year, Garcia would buy the supplies for her Thanksgiving dinner.
“I’ve lived here for 11 years,” Garcia said. “And each year, to make it through to the holidays, I would buy some supplies for the holiday each month.
“Sometimes I was going without one thing or another to make it possible. But this will make it easier on us this year.”
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and El Paso County Commissioner Willie Gandara Jr. were among those who donated to the cause.
